MAYBE MALTHUS FIGURED IT RIGHT
(…long before the eco-evangelicals came to town)
Global warming is a fact…a cyclical fact, one which has been going on since the creation of our planet. In the last million years, our world has gone through no less than four such cycles…that is from global cooling to global warming, and back again…and each time the process has caused a related “climate change”.
The problem we have with discussing the subject intelligently is not only because of the distorted rhetoric about it, but also, because no one seems willing to present all the factors involved with it, thus making it impossible to truly understand to what extent the cyclical or the contributory factors involved are the main drivers of the issue.
We have yet to hear any of today’s experts or pundits from the scientific community presenting us with clear explanations, for example, on how the Malinovsky theories concerning the Earth’s orbital track, its axial tilt cycles, and its “wobble” phases, contribute to the cyclical warming-cooling process. Nor do they mention any of the late H.H. Lamb’s research work concerning the range of past global temperatures, some much higher than today’s, others much lower, with corresponding rises and falls of oceanic levels, and changes of climate resulting from all of that.
In short, we do not get a complete picture of what’s going on with our world. And because the picture is incomplete, it is distorted, and being distorted, we risk coming to wrong conclusions about global warming and climate change because of that. And the most vociferous of those using these distortions are what can only be called…The Eco-Evangelicals…who insist on approaching these issues as a matter of faith rather than real science. And their “faith-based” approach is to claim that we humans and our activities are the sole cause of global warming and climate change. We are not the sole cause, but probably a major contributing one. So by their exhortations to – Stop Global Warming!-…-Fight Climate Change! -…they are stampeding our career politicos to adopt poorly thought out policies and projects, and endorsing actions which might not only go down the wrong paths, but might just aggravate our situation in the process.
Does anyone seriously believe that if we halted all CO2 emissions tomorrow, right down to zero…that global warming would come to a halt? Of course not, so such “sloganeering” does little to help us properly understand the true relationship between the cyclical factors involved, and the contributory ones involved.
There’s not much we can do about the cyclical factors involved. These have nothing to do with us humans and our activities. We can do something about the contributory factors, but perhaps only in a limited way. That is, we can change our habits, and do what we can to make our environments cleaner and less polluted than we have made them; and, prepare ourselves to develop ways and means to adapt to the changes that are bound to come to our environments by the cyclical factors relating to global warming and the climate changes the result from that… but not much else.
Here are some facts to consider…each cooling cycle in the past million years lasted only some 50,000 years or so. The interglacial, or warming cycles, each lasted no less than 100,000 years or so. Thus, since the last glacial period began thawing out some 30,000 years ago, we are looking at another 70,000 years in this current warming cycle, regardless of what we try to do about it. Except perhaps….from our contributions to it…that may simply ACCELERATE us back into the next cooling/glacial cycle (melted icecaps, expanded oceans, higher temperatures, more evaporations, more snow, new growing icecaps, etc.)
Well, it would seem, from that perspective, maybe Malthus had figured it out right…long before the Eco-Evangelicals came to town. Our sheer population numbers are the prime culprits of the contributory CO2 factor here. Much like what happens when livestock is allowed to overgraze the ranges, or when fisheries are over exploited, those environments… collapse.
One million years ago there were only some 40,000 humans on this planet. Today, we number nearly 7,000,000,000. Has anyone bothered to compute how much CO2 is emitted by all that humanity? (try it: breath/min x grams of CO2/breath x 60 =Grams CO2/hr x 24= grams CO2/day x 365=grams CO2/yr/human x 7Billion humans=Tot. Metric Tons CO2 emitted/yr).
I suspect that total emission just from humans breathing in and out, outweighs any other total emissions from any other sources. And the only conclusion we can draw from that…to abide by the Eco-Evangelicals’ mantras of —stop global warming – and – fight climate change – is to do away with the human race…or a large portion of it.
Which is more or less what Malthus was predicting would happen if human numbers were allowed to multiply…unchecked.
