THOSE PREDATORY MONSTERS WHO LIVE AMONG US
(…are concealed by their smiley faces and normal shoes)
The recent discovery in Cleveland, Ohio, of three young women who had been abducted in their teens, then held in sex-slave captivity for a decade, is another example of how those predatory monsters among us…are concealed by their smiley faces and normal shoes.
They live Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde lives, blending in as common ordinary folk on one hand, then ravening secretive predators on the other. It’s almost as if they are driven by schizoid or multiple personalities (and one can’t help but wonder why none of them have yet used this kind of…the-devil-made-me-do-it…excuse for their misdeeds). Unfortunately this Cleveland case is not the first of its kind, nor will it be the last, alas, to jolt our sense of living in a secure world of “normal” banality.
The only difference between these three brothers involved in this case, and others of their ilk, is that their victims were kept alive for all that time, unlike so many others who were not and yet remain – disappeared – Even so, in the preliminary stages of the investigation of this crime there are suggestions that there may be other victims to be found, and whose fates are yet undetermined.
It’s difficult to comprehend why such depravity seems so rampant in our society these days. Of course none of that is new in our human history, and this kind of predatory sexual activity has been around since the human race began. Yet we still prefer to think we’ve evolved into more “civilized” creatures by now, with such basic instincts mostly bred out of us.
There are some who will now claim that the really causative culprit here goes back to the so-called –Sexual Revolution – of the ‘60s, where the premise of “free love” was to liberate us all from the constraints and taboos of former times about sex activity would diminish such primal urges. The way things are these days, and this case, suggests that premise was a false and misguided notion.
The reality, however, may have a much simpler answer for why these kinds of things happen… as it was expressed in a long-ago radio show called – The Shadow – which always concluded its crime fighting episode with this solemn pronouncement :
“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men…The Shadow knows!”
