FROM ITS HEYDAY AS A BASTION OF THE RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH…
(…to being an epicenter of bigotry and intolerance against any non-conforming views)

The latest threat of another round of violent demonstration and protest, against the presence on campus of an invited guest speaker with non-conforming views, is a clear indication of how Berkeley has declined from its heyday as a bastion of the right to free speech…to being an epicenter of bigotry and intolerance against any non-conforming views.

So once again mob rule has prevailed at Berkeley forcing the cancellation of a speech by Ann Coulter because neither UC Berkeley officials nor local law enforcement could guarantee the safety of such an invited guest.

We’re not really cognizant as to why Ann Coulter warranted such an invitation, or, why her presence would be the cause of such opposition to it. Perhaps we’re just not well informed about her erstwhile importance and why her views and what she has to say should generate even a mild interest in them…by anyone.

Apparently few of the folks who are part of the Berkeley campus community are clear about the concept of the right to free speech, which may explain the vehemence of their opposition to any form of it they disapprove of. What’s even more ironic is that their manner and style of protest is exactly what they’re supposedly protesting against.

Frankly, we can’t help but wonder if any of them are actually experiencing a process of “higher learning.” If those so adamantly opposed to having any invitee present on campus that they disapprove of had any smarts, rather than using Social Media to call out a mass protest against such presence…they would instead call out for a mass…absence…from the scene.

Picture it…what if instead of a mass body of protest at the venue of such a presence…there was absolutely no one there…complete and total absence of anyone or anything. How telling would such a “demonstration” be of anyone’s contempt or disdain for whoever had been invited to speak? Rather than providing a much desired bit of publicity for such a guest speaker…they would be left with only a marginal audience of no real importance.

So to all Berkeley-ites inclined to protest about anything and anyone…just for the sake of protesting…the next time just send out that call…don’t nobody show up…not even a mouse! We can’t think of a greater and more effective “put down” than that.
