IT’S OUR 4TH OF JULY PARTY
(so let the band play on….while it still can)

America loves to have a party, and the 4th of July is its best excuse for having one.

In many ways this celebration resembles the somewhat bacchanalian excesses of the college –Spring Break- rituals, to set aside the academic grind, and the grim realities of approaching –Finals- , for a let-it-all-hang-out-tomorrow-is-another-day moment of hedonistic insouciance.

And so it is with America today which, regardless of its flaws, the soap-opera character of its history, and whatever economic or societal stresses might be lurking over the horizon, stubbornly insists on taking that kind of time-out to celebrate the birth of our nation, which continues to survive, in spite of itself. The big question, of course, is how much longer it will continue to survive with such a manner of facing up to its problems.

Who knows?

Our parlous financial and economic condition and the rapidly approaching debt limit storm, suggests we resemble the Titanic, racing headlong through the dark over an ice-laden sea, oblivious to anything except reaching its destination….on schedule. And the useless wrangling of the stalwart crew manning our ship of state simply reinforces that analogy, because those worthies seem more intent on seeking out individual political life vests, and securing a place on whatever political lifeboat they can find, while leaving the rest of us to fend for ourselves,  rather than attending to the serious business of trying to save our ship.

Everyone’s attitude seems to be….what the hell….it’s our 4th of July party! So….let the band play on….while it still can.
