A TEAPOT TEMPEST ROARS ON
(…manufactured from hypocritical outcries)
Mr. Snowden’s so-called whistle blowing revelations about the NSA’s wide ranging mega-data collection methods are not news. The process has been going on for many years. That’s its task which, we the people, through the portal of our honorable Congress, gave it.
So where’s the beef, folks?
It seems to derive from an extreme, almost paranoid, perspective about government, at all levels, questioning its motivations about anything it does…even for our own protection. Why this should be so is difficult to comprehend. Much of that mindset may have begun as far back as the 60s and Vietnam, becoming progressively more intense and ingrained in us with each passing decade since those times. Granted, there have been a number of governmental goofs, failures, illegal acts, and just plain stupidities, in that interval until today, that could have some justification for it, but…let’s not stampede ourselves to an extreme reaction here because of that.
Essentially this is a teapot tempest which roars on…manufactured from hypocritical outcries by both the media and our career politicos…who conveniently ignore that they were the first ones to scream bloody murder after 9/11 because our intelligence gathering agencies failed to do then what they are now doing on our behalf.
Let us also not ignore something else as well. That is, compared to the NSA’s mega-data methodology, what our business and commercial entities are doing in the same vein is ten times more intrusive on our “privacy”, is uncontrolled by any significant oversight restrictions, and functions with absolute impunity because of our tacit acceptance of how and why they do it. In short, we “trust” those special business interests, no matter how many times we’ve been given proof of their fraudulent and venal conduct. Yet when it comes to our government “trust” seems to strangely…disappear.
The motto on our currency may say…In God We Trust…but, like all others, when it comes to our government … it…has to pay cash!
