THE PATRIOTS HAVE JUST LEARNED A LESSON…
(…on how to deflate…a reputation…without hardly trying…)
The ongoing controversy about the Patriot football team’s winning the recent Super Bowl championship, in which it and its quarterback are accused of cheating to gain an edge so they could win it, seems to be just one more episode highlighting the way big-money considerations have a universally corrupting influence.
Of course such a corrupting influence is not unique to football and the NFL. We’ve seen it with other professional sports such as baseball…cycling, etc.. Nor is the cheating virus (winning by any means) unknown to almost any other professional vocation such as… politics…banking and financial institutions…stock brokerage firms…teaching…real estate ventures…and even the…legal one. We might say that in America today…cheating…is endemic and almost considered as de rigeur if one wants to move to the head of the pack.
What should be of greater concern, however, is that whenever such cheaters are inevitably exposed they all seem to use some form of…the-devil-made-me-do-it…as their excuse for having done so. Which doesn’t say much about the current state of society’s ethical core values these days, and, goes to show that that least endearing of our human character traits…greed…is not only alive and well, but isn’t about to disappear any time soon.
Meanwhile, the Brady bunch has just learned a lesson on how to deflate…a reputation… without hardly trying.
