ANOTHER DO-OVER FOR LADY LIBERTY
(….and will it include a manicure or pedicure for her?)

The Park Service just announced that right after her coming 125th birthday bash in October Lady Liberty will be closed for a full year, and given another renovation….some $27 Million dollars worth. Apparently that last three year and $60 Billion dollar bit of rehab some years ago didn’t quite do enough for her.

One can’t help but wonder what they missed doing that last time. If we correctly recall the past publicity about that effort, the old girl was going to get a completely new young chick’s internals for her bod (steel framework, staircase, elevators, etc.), plus a lot of new copper patches for her robes (which had become somewhat ragged), a fully re-wired and gilded torch light for her hand, and of course a touch up to her crown-like tiara. And, oh yes, not to forget, a big landscaping job all around her footsies.

And when at last she emerged from all that “plastic surgery” she looked even more gorgeous than when she first arrived here as a young debutante from la belle France a 125 years ago. We even gave her a bigger celebrating bash than when she first arrived here.

Now what?

Granted, New York harbor’s salt sea air probably isn’t too kind to a grand old broad like her, but this paltry $27 Million bit of touching up just shows she’s a high maintenance one, but I doubt seriously anyone will complain about that, even in these hard times. She’s worth it. After all, how many other folks in this world even have one like her to maintain?

Well, here’s a short memo for the Park Service….guys, make sure this project includes a manicure and pedicure for her….okay?
