THE CONSTITUTION IS THE ONLY CULT THAT COUNTS
(….everything else is just….religion)

It’s always amazing how stupidly low some of our political operatives and players stoop during our quadrennial political brawls for the Presidency, just to gain what they think might give them an edge over their competitors for that office.

In this instance a Evangelical reverend from Texas has suggested that Mormonism is a “cult”, the implication being that Mormons are not “Christians.” The question is…. might we not make the same suggestion about erstwhile evangelicals? Thus, this has all the appearance of it being another case of a pot calling a kettle….black. Even more to the point, the fact that reverend happens to be from Texas….is just too much of a coincidence.

None of these shenanigans are new of course. Potential rival candidates’ religious denomination or affiliation….or lack of it – have always been used for or against them in these political campaigns. One of the more extreme examples of that in recent times was when John Kennedy first ran for President. The howls of alarm his candidacy raised in certain quarters of the electorate became a Greek Chorus of doom predicting the end of our republic, because his allegiance would be to the Pope, whose influence would then over ride all our constitutional provisions, et., etc., etc. Some even suggested that the Inquisition would soon be revived if he were elected.

From our republic’s very first days our politics have been as dirty as anyone else’s. It’s been the nature of our beast. Fortunately, while democracy allows folks to vote dumb as well as smart, our electorate has usually gone with the latter….for the most part….dismissing such nonsense as….irrelevant.

To put it bluntly, every religion has its share of extremely dogmatic adherents who hold to certain rituals and practices not particularly in line with its mainstream practices. Christianity, is no exception, and, has probably evolved more such subsets, or cults, than any other religion of this world. Why else are there so many denominations of it today? Many, at the time of their formation, were considered “cults”, with Evangelism being the most recent manifestation of that process. Frankly, whether it’s a pair of young bright-eyed Mormon “elders” in training, with matching dark suits and ties; or, two Evangelicals in non-descript outfits, knocking on my door….I’d be hard pressed to find any “cult” difference between them.

Well, when it comes to any potential candidate for the Presidency, all I want to hear is….The Constitution is the only cult that counts, everything else is just religion, and, I swear to uphold, protect, and defend it…. so help me God!

Meanwhile, let’s all remember one thing….respect other folks’ beliefs….they’re no weirder than your own.
