A DOPEY KIND OF OPTION
(in competitive sports)

Lance Armstrong’s public admission that he did indeed use performance enhancing drugs is a sad commentary on the mindset in today’s professional sports community.

He is the most recent member of it to admit to the practice, raising the question…why? Yes, why do so many members of that professional sports community indulge in the practice… since there are so many long term negative impacts on their health if they do so? And ultimately, when it is discovered, the validity of whatever records they may have achieved because of that…become questioned…and their native talent for their sport falls into doubt as well.

Money, of course, seems to be the prime motive behind it all, driving them to such extremes because athletes who set such extreme records of performance find very fat endorsement deals and other financial returns offered by a horde of sponsors of one kind or another, all convinced that such deals will also enhance whatever product marketing goals these might have in mind. Along with all of that there’s the added cachet of –celebrity- which has its own “fringe benefits” as well.

Well, so long as today’s professional sports culture is driven by such a dopey kind of option for…winning at any cost…it will remain in what is essentially a corrupt environment. Even with so-called amateur sports, whether at the Olympic or high school levels…the practice seems to be oozing into them as well.

Perhaps the ancient Greeks had it right…the only thing winning athletes got for their pains and efforts were a few laurel leaf crowns for their heads…and bragging rights until the next round of competition.
