BRAIN-DEAD WALKING ZOMBIES OF THE TEXTING WORLD
(…keypad junkies of the oblivious kind)
A new and growing form of addiction seems to be among us these days…text…or…text messaging…which is fast developing as a new species of erstwhile “humans.”
For lack of a better description we’re calling these…brain-dead walking zombies of the texting world…keypad junkies of the oblivious kind…who run into lampposts and other people on the street, not to mention risking life and limb inattentively crossing against traffic lights, or worse, while behind the wheel of a vehicle, blasting through red traffic lights, or careening into others on the highways…all because they’re focused on virtual rather than…actual…reality.
For all practical purposes this is the most negative dumbing-down aspect of our modern digital technology, one which emphasizes and promotes mindless fixation on visual stimulation over any kind of mental acuity or cognitive capacity. In short, it’s creating anything but – a brave new world – and how that will ultimately affect the rest of us is hard to say.
Before very long we suspect we’ll be seeing a new category of both publicly and privately sponsored “rehab” facilities to help such keypad junkies (voluntarily ot otherwise) kick their insidious addiction. Most likely such a rehab process will be to immerse them for six months or a year in a totally –analog- environment having no computers, no ipads, no iphones, or any of the familiar digital world’s…tweets…texts…keywords…icons… etc.. These will simply not exist for them during that process.
How effective such a rehab regimen might be is hard to say. We can only hope that anyone going through it will have some sort of “born again” epiphany to make them less susceptible to the blandishments of that digital world, and thus avoid a return of their addiction to it.
Of course, if all else fails, our only other option will then be to transform them from being brain-dead walking zombies into…vampires…instead. So, does anyone know Count Dracula’s Facebook or Twitter account?
