A LATTER-DAY VERSION OF JACKSONIAN ERA REMOVALS…
(…in support of a politically correct cause-du-jour)

The continuing public furor over the events in Charlottesville, is now stampeding elected public officials…Mayors, State legislators, Governors, and members of Congress…to jump onto that bandwagon of public outrage with a latter-day version of Jacksonian era removals, to eliminate every possible vestige of anything remotely relating to or reminding us of the historical reality called…the Confederacy.

Such a kneejerk reaction by our career politicos smacks of hypocritical opportunistic posturing on their part since, in all the years of their political careers, none of them have ever made a peep about it before…until now…raising troubling questions about the quality of their character and integrity.

While the Jacksonian era clamor for “removal” against the Seminoles, Cherokees, and other tribes, was mainly driven by land-grabbing greed, the current public clamor about Confederate monuments has a greater resemblance to the same kind of mindless mass hysteria displayed during China’s Cultural Revolution, than anything else. In short, as with that episode of modern Chinese history, what’s happening here in America today serves no useful or constructive purpose to resolve the residues of racism which remain imbedded in our society’s matrix of today.

Attempting to view the realities of our history through the lens of today’s social values only results in distorted perspectives and understandings of those realities, begetting only more exchanges of epithets and vituperations between ourselves rather than engaging in serious dialogues to overcome and awake from that history.
