IT’S APOCALYPSE NOW! IT’S APOCALYPSE NOW!
(uh….sorry, folks, due to technical difficulties there will be a slight delay)
Guess what, we’re all still here….and the world is still going to hell in a hand basket!
Apparently, a radio/televangelist reverend named Canning (whom I never heard of before) had predicted the end of the world by the 21st of May. When nothing happened as he had predicted, he’s now saying….sorry, folks, due to technical difficulties there will be a slight delay. The new date he’s now predicting is set for October.
Not a good choice by the good reverend because that will make a lot of avid, if not rabid, football fans even more unhappy then they are already, due to the deadlocked negotiations between the leagues Owners and Players. C’est la vie!
None of this is new, of course. Such predictions about the end of days, the rapture, the second coming, and the end of the world, etc., have been made since as far back as Roman times. It’s part of our human psyche’s need for certainty in an otherwise unpredictable and uncertain existence. It’s that ultimate imponderable….which drives so many people nuts, and into taking really nutty measures to face that….imponderable.
The sad thing about it all, however, is how that sense of uncertainty allows truly devout believers, of whatever kind, to be stampeded into illusive zealotry by the blandishments of clever charlatans posing as men of God….but who are actually men of Business instead (St. Jerome where are you when we could use you?)
Well, perhaps Shakespeare summed it up best with this line from one of his plays: “To thy own self be true, thou canst not then be false to any man.” To which one might add….nor to God either….for that matter.
