IT SEEMS TO ME I’VE HEARD THAT SONG BEFOFRE….
(only now it’s going to cost us a whole lot more…)
As the President and this Congress continue playing political end games with each other at our expense, it’s obvious that none of them are playing it straight or have any intention of doing right by us and the nation, by accomplishing real change in the way our fiscal affairs are handled.
The best that we can hope for now is that they will somehow manage to avoid sending us all over an economic cliff before Tuesday’s deadline. But whatever solution they come up with to avoid that it will only be a band-aid one, and not a significant improvement or fix to the present system of taxation….or how those taxes picked from our pockets are properly applied. Their idea of “tightening our belts and making sacrifices during these difficult times…” is for us to make do with lean cuisine….while they continue to live fat with their pay and perks.
It’s a disgusting state of affairs, and the most disgusting aspect of that is their self-serving justifications for our national debt load, the necessity for their deficit spending habits and inflated flim-flam budget proposals, all, presented to us with the straight-faced, solemn, sincerity of blue-suede-shoe salesmen, who know full well they’re lying through their teeth just for purposes of political CYA.
It was ever thus.
Here’s an example of what a taxpayer gets back when posing tough questions about these matters to any high official. In this instance it was from one of the few (at the time) who had any kind of reputation for fiscal integrity.
Here’s what he wrote to me, quote:
“Thank you for taking the time to write. I appreciate hearing from you.
As Director of the Office of Management and Budget, I am working with the President and the Congress to develop and put in place a comprehensive economic plan for the nation. That plan, already proposed by the President and on its way to enactment by the Congress, reduces deficits, invests in long term economic growth, and seeks to strengthen the present economic recovery. In addition I am helping the President to fulfill his pledge to improve the management of government in order to make it more responsive and cost-effective.Let me assure you that I appreciate your views and will show them to the White House and my staff.”
Unquote!
That….was eighteen years ago, but as we can see, through succeeding administrations and Congresses here we are today, and to paraphrase a bit from an old song title….it seems to me I’ve heard that song before….only now it’s going to cost us….a whole lot more!
